Farewell to the Class of 2025

The 2025 leavers are a special group...

We used one of Emily Dickinson’s poems in which she describes living in a metaphorical house where everything seems possible, as a helpful way to try and capture their character and outlook at their Valedictory Celebration. We spoke about the need for them to ‘dwell in possibility’ in the future, but so many of this cohort already are.

Dickinson uses the windows in the house to explore the idea of being outward-looking: that is certainly true of this group. It was commonplace to hear the ‘ding’ of Duolingo early in the morning before lessons, and normal to overhear conversations in the quad about global elections and far-flung travel plans.

She also speaks of a roof open to “the gambrels of the sky”, which resonates: the class of 2025 dream big. Some are heading for Oxford, some for Goldman Sachs, some for Sandhurst, some for Duke in the USA. There are those with their own businesses up and running already, and those already racking up England caps. There are no limits to what they will go on and achieve.

And finally, if you dwell in possibility and keep your mind open, Dickinson argues, then you will receive “the fairest” of visitors. Yes, we know that the friendships forged at Mill Hill will endure and strengthen over time, but we also know new friends are waiting and will be drawn to them. Because above all, this lot are kind, thoughtful and caring.  Perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay them is this: if I were to go back in time and imagine myself turning up as a fresh-faced undergraduate in my first seminar or lecture, I would be absolutely thrilled to find myself sat next to a Millhillian from this cohort, because I know I’d they’d be curious, generous, warm and welcoming.

So, watch this space, because the class of 2025 already dwell in possibility.
