John Allen (Burton Bank 1971-1977)

John Allen and his identical twin brother, Peter, joined Mill Hill School in 1971 as part of the first intake of
3rd formers, a bold experiment destined to face its share of challenges. Arriving at Burton Bank, the twins
appeared sweet and innocent, but it took only three weeks for their dormitory prefect to discover their true
nature. These “little cherubs” quickly earned a reputation for mischief, creating havoc while skilfully
evading detection. This teamwork and skill remained a defining strength throughout their lifetimes.
John was a gifted sportsman, excelling in both athletics and rugby. His standout achievement in athletics
was breaking the school’s 800m record, previously held by the talented Billy Reid. On the rugby field,
John’s determination and leadership qualities earned him the captaincy of the 1st XV in 1976 under the
guidance of Rugby Master Conrad Snook. Known for his subtle wit and unyielding drive, John inspired his
teammates and left a lasting impression.
After leaving school, John ventured into the world of reinsurance and began his career with a Lloyd’s
broker. On the same trading floor was Vik, who was very surprised to see a young John Allen walking
around. Surely not another Allen working here! It seemed John and Peter were destined to work in the same
industry sector.
John went on to carve out a phenomenal career. He travelled extensively, building enduring professional and
personal relationships with his clients. He truly loved his work and found the perfect balance between
business and pleasure.
The Allen twins became a formidable duo, often referred to affectionately as the “Kray twins.” At one point,
they even worked together as colleagues at the same firm, the ultimate dream team. Both John and Peter are
widely regarded as legends within the Lloyd’s market, leaving an indelible mark on their industry.
John continued his love for rugby, playing for the Old Millhillians and participating in memorable matches,
including the Centenary game against a Jim Roberts XV packed with county and international players. Off
the pitch, his mischievous streak shone brightly, from pranks involving a Rolls-Royce emblem to an incident
in Vichy that almost sparked an international uproar. Despite his antics, John had a knack for avoiding
trouble and detection, a skill he perfected over the years.
He also played for the Lloyd’s Rugby Touring Team, and many stories have been recounted about trips
away, but, as the saying goes, “what goes on tour, stays on tour”!
The Gate in Arkley became a social hub for Old Millhillians, and it was here that John met Karen. They
married in 1986, settled down in Barnet, and finally moved to a wonderful house in Highgate. Known for
their exceptional hospitality, John and Karen hosted countless gatherings filled with laughter, practical jokes,
and never-empty glasses. Christmas wasn’t complete without the infamous “Allen’s Ham Party,” a cherished
tradition.
John loved his holidays away with family and friends. Whether on wonderful exotic trips, or just casual long
weekends in a B&B, as long as everyone was happy and having fun, so was he.
Tragedy struck 12 years ago when Peter passed away suddenly. This loss deeply affected John, but he
became a pillar of strength for Peter’s family, offering unwavering support to his nephews and nieces. His
generosity extended beyond his family; John was a trusted confidant, a source of sound advice, and an active
supporter of various charities, along with the Old Millhillian Lodge.
In recent years, John faced health challenges with characteristic resilience. Despite his cancer diagnosis, he
maintained a good quality of life for over two years, thanks to superb immunotherapy treatment. Surrounded
by his loving family, Karen, daughters Emma and Laura, their partners Sally and Harry, and his cherished
grandchildren Olive, Poppy, and Woody, John spent his final days at Guy’s Hospital. Even in his last
moments, his cheeky humour and sharp wit remained intact.
John Allen was a remarkable man. Energetic, charismatic, and full of life. With his razor-sharp wit and
infectious charm, he could command any room. Known affectionately as JK, but really “Mr. Mischief,” John
brought joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories to all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours in Highgate, Norfolk, Majorca,
and around the globe. John’s legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on in the hearts of those he
touched.
Bless you, John. Thank you for your friendship.
