A Millhillian Playwright

We had the pleasure of welcoming back Old Millhillian Tanika Gupta (1980-1982, McClure), a talented playwright and screenwriter.

We had the pleasure of welcoming back to school, Old Millhillian (OM) Tanika Gupta (1980-1982, McClure), a talented playwright and screenwriter who has left an indelible mark on the arts. She has written over 25 stage plays produced in major theatres across the UK, including the Empress, Lions and Tigers. She has written for television, including EastEnders, Grange Hill, The Bill, and film and radio.

As well as viewing her portrait in the Old Millhillians' room and visit her boarding house, McClure - which she recalled as being really smelly because of all the boys in there! When Tanika attended the School she was one of only thre female pupils in the sixth form.

The English department organised a Q&A for pupils to hear more about Tanika's time at Mill Hill and her career beyond. She spoke about her A level english teacher, Mr Winter's encouragement, her being the editor of the school magazine and taking real delight in rejecting one of the master's articles for inclusion!

One of her most outstanding memories of her time at school was the School Production of Arthur Miller's  'Death of a Salesman' and peer Jasper Britton's performance had really inspired her. She describes his limp due to a recent skateboarding accident on Wills Grove had only added to his performance.

Tanika had always been encouraged to write by her artistic family and it was friends that had suggested she attend a play writing workshop because of how well she wrote dialogue. She began writing full time in her late twenties and after a successful career writing for TV and Radio she decided to move back in to theatre where she enjoys the freedom, creativity and collaborative process. Tanika's work often touches upon themes of cultural identity and she wants to write about her world. Her adaptation of a Doll's House was of real interest to her not only because of her interest in Colonialism but also writing through the eyes of a mixed marriage - as that is part of her own personal experience.

Her invaluable advice to pupils was to never give up and find people that understand you. Only let those you really trust to read you work but also to read books and read plays and keep watching plays and films. She encouraged our writers to get to know their own mind and their voice - theatres are looking to hear a writer's voice. Finally, be vigorous about what you write.

Every year, the English department leads the Tanika Gupta Prize, a competition for A Level English Literature pupils. Tanika’s work as a playwright explores issues relating to diversity. The prize was established to encourage and celebrate diversity in the study of English.
The afternoon conclude with Tanika presenting the winners of this year’s Tanika Gupta Prize. First place was awarded to Sasha B (Priestley), with Amelie R (School) and Maya D (Cedars) named as runners-up.

It was wonderful to welcome Tanika back to Mill Hill and have her share her experiences with our pupils. Her visit was both inspiring and memorable, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the opportunity to meet her.
