Dear Old Millhillians,
Career opportunities in Journalism are diverse and varied. We are very fortunate that one of the UK’s most experienced practitioners and teachers in this field has kindly agreed to give a talk on the paths available to anyone aspiring to a long and successful career in the ever-changing landscape of journalism.
Professor Barling has been Professor of Journalism at Middlesex University for the past 10 years following nearly 30 years as a practising BBC journalist and film-maker. He is the author of several books and widely published in the academic literature. He published over 2000 news articles during his 26 years with BBC News & Current Affairs in a variety of roles including producer, director and ultimately News Special Correspondent.
He won numerous national awards for his work and in particular he is proud of winning more awards for featuring diversity in his work than any other British journalist. He also headed up People Focus, an independent production company producing, writing and presenting several award-winning documentaries for BBC2 and Channel Four Dispatches.
Professor Barling is an expert in the digital transformation of journalism and the impact Artificial Intelligence is likely to have on future careers in the field. He describes himself as optimistic about the future role of journalism in preserving an Open Society and sees opportunities in content generation, production and distribution, all of which require a variety of skills although not necessarily all delivered by the same individual journalist. In the digital eco-system there will be new roles and new methods of delivery but the fundamentals of storytelling will remain the same as they have done in the 500 years since journalism began shaping public discourse.
